There are some decent free antivirus apps out there, but the best ones cost money. Some good free ones:
Comodo beta:

Avast:

AVG:

I would recommend that you invest in a proper security suite that includes antivirus, firewall, antispyware, antiadware, etc.. .from a reliable vendor (mcafee, norton, kaspersky, etc).
You will need to properly configure the program and ensure it is completely up to date and ensure it is setup to automatically check for and install updates on at least a daily basis. Most do so automatically.
The average complete suite will run you about 79 bucks and if you are vigilant in its use you will be fairly well protected. It's also a good idea to attempt to (in advance) learn how the program works and what to do when presented with an alert or option.
If you are new to antivirus solutions or not, I still would not recommend going with freeware or with multiple programs.. it's much easier for the average user to figure out how to properly work one and you will be provided with technical support and a wide variety of user support.
You'll also want to keep you windows OS updated by running windows update automatically and occasionally manually.
Good Luck

You can download a free virus protection. Open internet explorer and type in windows defender.com.Microsoft offers this for free. There are a few sites that try to get you to pay for it. If you run into it it just go to the next one until you hit the free one.
