It's not a matter of financial gain, it's a matter of looking out for the environment.

Every penny takes a lot of copper to make it, and copper ore is mined and smelted. Mining scars the surface of the Earth. Smelting releases acrid air pollution. We, and everything else that lives on this planet, live with the results.

Copper ore has been commercial at half a percent copper for quite some time now. To put that in practical terms that means to get one penny worth of copper, you have to mine 200 times the volume of the rock to get the volume of copper needed to produce each penny. So imagine 200 pennies worth of rock and you can see how much rock you have to mine to get something many people regard as worthless and beneath them to pick up.

So the next time you see a penny on the ground if you pick it up you'll avoid having that much more rock being mined to replace it. One penny doesn't make much of a difference, but millions of people picking them up does. Picking up the penny is within your power, and passing it by merely means you're relying on someone else to do it.

It's said that if the penny is heads up, it's good luck to pick it up.... So, if the penny is heads up, I'll pick it up. If it's tails up, I'll either pass it by or turn it over for the next person.
