Yes Sir, it's true.

From 8 test matches in India, Ricky Ponting has just scored 172 runs at a very very very very low average of 12.28.

On the other hand, Sachin has an average of 54 in Australia.
& Brian Lara has an average of 41 in Australia.

So, Sachin has proved himself in all countries but Ricky Ponting is yet to prove himself on Indian wickets.

******* NOTE - Yours truly is a big Punter Ponting fan. I wish him all the best for the future matches. I think he is the only man right now who can challenge my favorite Sachin Tendulkar as the 'BEST'.
Mohammed Yousuf is 'NOTHING' on bouncy picthes.
In my eyes, the 3 cricketers that are there to challenge Sachin Tendulkar are -
* Ricky Ponting
* Jaquues Kallis
* Rahul Dravid
Kevin Pieterson is young. I am sure he will be at top 4-5 years from now.

So, don't think that i have posted it as a dumb Tendulkar fan.
This is my view that if -
* Ricky Ponting wants to become #1 of his era then he is one step away from it .

I'll add more

Bingalee - You have misunderstood.

Look there are two different things -

1) Best batsman 'RIGHT NOW'
2) Best batsman of this 'ERA'

Ricky Ponting is definately the best batsman right now.

But to be best batsman of his time, he's still atleast 1 step behind both Sachin Tendulkar & Brian Lara.

That best batsman award which International Chucking Council (ICC)gave him proves that he is right now the best but it doesn't prove that he's the best of this era.

My agenda here is different. Try to understand.

**** Don't answer this questions as an Indian or Australian. Answer as a neutral cricket fan and your answers are always appreciated here.

Cheers!!!

Though Ricky Ponting is a very good batsman and some people consider him as the best batsman in the world, I do not still consider him as the best batsman in the world as he will never able to break some of the records set by Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar duiring his carreer.

Pontings poor form is the reason why Australia lost the series two tours ago in India ( I think it was 2001). He did not contribute at all with the bat and on a tough tour when the number 3 doesnt contribute you are on the back foot.
If this up and coming test series was to be played in India I would have no doubt his excellent for would continue. He is a much better player of spin now, and a very complete batsman. Unfortunately he has no chance of proving that until there is a test series in India again.
I hear what you are saying but how do you compare? What are these 3 players records in SA, NZ, Pak, SL?
Ponting never had to face Warne and McGrath, Sachin never faced Kumble and Harbijan and Lara never faced Ambrose and Walsh.

Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara are still better than Ricky Ponting

He's close... but he has scored about 5 less centuries than Sachin in 30 more matches.

But he has an average of over 75 in the past 5 years (ponting)
whilist Sachin isnt as great as he once was anymore

No matter how much ponting scored in India or Sachin & Lara scored in Australia.This is all about match winning performace.Ponting played many match winning performances with extra resposibility of captaincy.This is also about Lara.Many times he single handedly guide his team towards victory.So i think all 3 are great at different level.

No I would'nt! As Ponting has been named the world's best batsman, you have to accept that. What he does in India is not an overall sumation of his talent.You are being very loyal to Sachin, but facts are facts!

honestly if you asked me ill tell u that he is a jerk. he could never come even a mile close to sachin-lara. he always brags about being the best player. best captain.. whatever. even if he plays well he doesn't have the modesty and proper behavior to match up to sachin lara. according to me rahul dravid s a winner coz he almost always defends his title of being the WALL of indian team.. jaq kallis s a gr8 player..
p.s: i am not a sachin fan! its all in my observation of australian cricket players. they play not just cricket but also mind games

Can I just say this...considering Aus have won more in Ind and WI than either Ind or WI have won in Aus (with these guys playing), individual batting averages don't really matter.

I guess all it shows you is that unlike Ind and WI who seem to depend on one major player, Aus don't have to do that.
