My daughter and I are going away tomorrow overnight and staying in a reputedly haunted hotel. What can I do to increase my probability of experiencing a ghost? My mom, sister, grandmother, husband and stepdaughter have all seen them, but I have not. What can I do to increase the odds?

I grew up in a house with poltergeists who did all sorts of weird things, but only my brother and mother saw actual spirits/were attacked by them....

Invite them let them know that you are not here to cause harm just to observe.

Many hotels keep note books (and some keep hand outs) on reported ghost sightings at their hotel.
First, you could ask if there is one and if you can see it. Next, talk to the desk clerks, maids, and other employees and see if they will share any stories.
You can then choose the room (or hang out in the area) that has the most (or the most recently reported) activity.
Most reports of ghosts are from people that are in a state of relaxation (but I don't suggest falling asleep). Many people that report seeing a ghost also have what is called high absorption (those people that can lose themselves in a book and not hear you calling them when they are reading). You can't give yourself this personality trait (though you can increase what you do have) but I would suggest an activity like reading or writing, etc. as most ghosts show up unexpected and not when one is staring intently looking for them. Of course be observant (or at least aware) of your surroundings.
Of course I would take at least a camera and have it by my side just in case ;)
Have fun on your outing ghosts or not.

I tried for years without success. Finally I figured out the secret. The secret is that you have to believe in ghosts in order to see one. If you believe strongly enough and are very impressionable then you increase your chances of seeing a ghost considerably. I always believed but I'm not impressionable so when I would visit haunted places I always came up with a rational explanation for unusual events.
The old saying is, "There's no such thing as a haunted house, just haunted people."

There is no good reason to see a "ghost". There are no such things as "ghosts". It is impossilbe to comunicate with the dead. The dead are dead. What your family saw and what people call "ghosts" are actually demons. Demons are not good things to mess with. There are things you can do to comunicate with them, but you definately should not. I agree that the supernatural is interesting, but not the kind that will do you harm. You want supernatural? Get to know God. He is way more powerful than those things of the Devil. They can perform little magic tricks, but they can't do any thing sugnfigant. They can't raise people from the dead, He can. Most importantly they don't care about you AT ALL. He loves you and has always loved you. He has already forgiven you for everything. He has waited for you for years. They will only hurt you and bring you death. He will bring you joy and life! :D All you have to do to here God is pray. He wants to talk to you. He will give you advice when you need really need it. He will comfort you when you need comfort. I had to get laser surgery about a month ago. I was scared out of my mind. I knew it was going to be painful. I worried about it for days. Every time it entered my mind, He would say, "I'll be there," and I would stop worrying. When I was laying there and panicking, He just said, "I'm here," and I literally felt someone holding my hand even though know one was there. The procedure was successful and it didn't hurt at all. That's only a small thing in compasrison to the things he can do. My friend Lynden's mom prayed over a dead little boy that her son had just accident'y killed and he woke up. God is powerful and He loves you. <3 God bless. : D
You may think so, but everything I said is true. He's way more interseting than anything evil. He wants you to come home. He's tried to talk to you, but you won't listen. You're His daughter. He forgives you for last night. He's made you to be a natural leader for a reason. Please choose to be on the winning team. Your life will be much less stressful. He's just waiting to bless you if you will accept His blessing. Think of your daughter. He wants to help. He loves her too.

Some people lack the ability to see ghosts. It is indeed a sixth sense, and there are varying degrees of it. Some people can see them, some people can not, but tell they are in a room with them or something like that. Perhaps your daughter has the sense even if you don't. Personally, having a small bit of that sense I'd prefer to stay away from them. It leaves me feeling chilled, uncomfortable, unable to breathe and overall it is not a good feeling. My husband has to drag me into places that are known to be haunted. I would never voluntarily go there. Good luck.

One thing that I do is light an unscented candle.
IT MUST BE UNSCENTED.
The reason is that a lot of spirits have scents and I seem to pick up on that. If a person used to wear a certain perfume, or liked roses, or smoked a pipe or cigar, etc.
The candle is a natural form of energy and the spirits seem to like that. I do not know why but it seems that way.
You may check out the spirit activity that I have at my home by going here.

I only found them by moving a lot from place to place. It increases your chance of being in a haunted home.
I also think that on an island where the belief pool is much more consistent, spirits tend to be more accessible.
spirit levels in Oahu I found to be extremely high, but in L.A. not so much.

you cant do anything to increase your chances of seeing a ghost. you can however do things to increase your chances of seeing and feeling demonic activity. leave it be, and if your daughter is young, leave her completely out of it since children and teens are most open to being attached. If a ghost wishes for you to see it, then it will happen. Do you know what the odds are of five people seeing a ghost are from the same family? add you and your daughter that would be very high odds. i have been at it since 1999 and to tell you truthfully, have never seen an actual ghost.

I would have to agree with Katie H.
Some people are born with an ability to see them & some aren't. If you don't have that ability, then open up some of your other senses. You may not be able to see them, but you may be able to sense or feel their pressance.
They don't come out on command either, so relax & open up your senses. In other words, don't try so hard.

Why in the world would you want to see one??? Do you go to funeral homes too???
EDIT...Wow...what did I say to deserve 5 thumbs down?? I just meant to say...from my point of view...most people are usually afraid of seeing ghosts...unless they're family members. It just amazes me that so many of you are "looking" for them. I don't understand what you want to gain from seeing a ghost. You're a lot braver than I am. I was so tricked by them..I don't trust any of them anymore.
