The "flashing" is an alert that there is a problem. You need to get it to a service center.

excerpt from page 13 of your owners manual, regarding the OD light:
"Illuminates when the overdrive
function has been turned OFF using
the Transmission Control Switch
(TCS) on end of gearshift. If the
light does not come on or the light flashes steadily, have your vehicle
serviced as soon as possible, as damage to the transmission could occur."

My 2002 Explorer started doing the same thing. I took it in to a Ford service shop, they said it was an electrical problem. All the symptoms you say are the same with mine, also...if I put mine in 3rd gear to take off it kind of winds and has no power til it starts moving. I'd definitely take it to a mechanic.

......Ford service shop charged me $342.00 just to inspect it, I'm sure a local auto repair shop will do as good as job as Ford will and cost you a lot less.
Good luck

attempt leaping it back. Wiggle all (4) the clamps till you spot them scratch the terminal. pass away them for 10+ minutes. could rev up the motor vehicle doing the charging (1500-2000rpm). Take it someplace and have the battery checked. If it nonetheless basically clicks, yet would not turn, attempt hitting the element of the starter (greater advantageous metallic cylinder section) with a hammer at an identical time as somebody tries to commence it.

On this particular year/make/model, they have reoccuring issues with the OD switch on the gear shifter. Is your OD light working on the shifter (not the one on the dash)? If not, you might be looking at a simple switch replacement. Have Autozone or Oreillys scan your vehicle to see if you get any transmssion related fault codes and go from there.
