This is the strangest question but I reckon anyone here at quarter to four on a Saturday might be up to answering it. My question is...is it strange to crave a deeper meaning to your life? It's only begun occuring to me recently that it might be. I'm just back from a thirtieth birthday party where I met some people from secondary school, people I haven't met in twelve years, along with others with whom I've kept in touch. It was SO anti-climactic...I thought it would be emotional and dramatic meeting each other again, thought we would have plenty to reminisce about, plenty of reflections about what it's like turning thirty and what we've learned of life and ourselves. Nobody seemed to think there was anything significant or remarkable about it, though. There was nothing but the usual light banter. It was all so casual. One other guy admitted to me that he felt the same way-- someone I keep in touch with, and who's "on my wavelength"-- but nobody else seemed to. Am I strange?

Like you I crave some meaning! But alas; like you I have realised most people are too shallow to care! They plod long, in the mundane humdrum flow of life, without question, thought or contemplation.

You have to accept that people are on different wave lengths. One isn't better or superior to any other... they are all just different!

Superficial shallow people are often too scared to look inside or think about the bigger picture. They can't deal with it, so choose not to go there.

Celebrate your own uniqueness and deeper level of intellect! Keep asking, keep seeking, keep looking for your meaning!

Strange in the way that Socrates, Thomas Aquinas, Jesus and Buddha were strange - they refused the status quo that all we have is to feed our appetites, pleasuring ourselves until the body breaks down.

That craving can be the beginning of a spiritual journey, into .. something....dependent upon your inclinations and open-mindedness (lack of fear of new ideas) if you follow up on it. See, that kind of craving usually gets hidden by distraction, but it will resurface, and you will remember the last time you wondered and felt that hollowness, and why didn't you do something back THEN ?

Friend, your question carries you into the company of the most insightful humans this planet has produced thus far, and the very fact that you are seriously asking these sorts of questions tells me that you have the impetus for some serious personal growth ahead of you.

The meaning I have found came from asking the same sort of thing as you are now doing. You will find it differently than I did, but there is something to be found, and it changes the way we pass through life thereafter.

Good Luck!

;-)

Yes I do crave meaning at the same time that I know that life is simpler just living and being.

Thankfully I have enough friends and also co workers who crave meaning so I know that I am not alone.

I find the shallowness excruciating like being totally out of my depth and banter the worst possible form of communication this veiled tit-for- tat a camouflage of normality. I crave realness for starters so that we can at least begin the discovery process rather than the mutual defence system to avoid realness.

My friend says that we evolved from
an unconscious state unawareness of being to a state of conscious unawareness - then will come unconscious awareness and conscious awareness. It fits for me.

I'm also an Aries. I love anything inspirational/anything that gives me meaning and enlightens me to be a better person in this world. And you know what, I also have many great heroes and role models and believe me, if I never had ever met one particular hero, I don't think I'd ever be the way that I am today. I understand that some of my actions may be brash and "surface-related", but it's only that way for people who don't know me well. For those who are closer to me, I express my ideas and philosophy to them and there's more to me than what people just see. I love meaning and doing things worthwhile.

The history of mankind is suffused by craving for meaning. However, since it is Saturday night, I think I have a 'mean craving'. Where's the ice cream?

Yeah, its a normal thing.

But you can get over it and become apathetic like the rest of the world. If you get tired of wondering.

Don't worry the meaning is there.

There is no transcendental meaning. The meaning of Life is just Life. In any case, love, good will, honesty are the true meanings of life.

Many people go through life without questioning it and there is a mutual bafflement between those who do and those who don't. "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" goes someway towards explaining this.

I love you...

*edit*--because you're not one of those shallow fools so prevalent these days.
