Don't listen to the myths. Go to Wikipedia (link below) and read the article there. Next go to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council's page (link also below) and read "How hot dogs are made: The real story". Third go back to Wikipedia and check out at least the first chapter of Upton Sinclair's biography (again the link is below). Finally laugh at all the people that think there's anything more scary than too much sodium in a hot dog.

A hot dog is a type of fully-cooked, cured and/or smoked moist sausage of soft, even texture and flavor. It is usually placed hot in a soft, sliced bun of approximately the same length as the sausage, and optionally garnished with condiments and toppings. The resulting product is often called a hot dog.

Everyone pretty much summed it up, but mainly in hot dogs are the meat garbage. Hot dogs are extremely unhealthy and are what I'd call mystery meat.

It depends on who's making it. For example, a Hebrew National hot dog has the following ingredients:
"Beef, water, salt, contains 2% or less of spice, paprika, hydrolyzed soy protein, garlic powder, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, flavorings."
A Nathan's Hot Dog, is similar, made from "100% beef with a special blend of spices and garlic"
http://www.nathansfamous.com/nathans/inside/htmls/menu_full.php#hotdogs
Ball Park makes both "franks" and all beek franks. For the regular frank, the ingredients are:
"BEEF AND PORK, MECHANICALLY SEPARATED TURKEY, WATER, CORN SYRUP, CONTAINS LESS THAN TWO PERCENT SALT, POTASSIUM LACTATE, PARTIALLY HYDROLYZED BEEF STOCK, SODIUM PHOSPHATES, FLAVORINGS, SODIUM DIACETATE, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), SODIUM NITRITE, EXTRACTIVES OF PAPRIKA"
http://www.ballparkfranks.com/product_fra_franks.html
while the beef franks have
"BEEF, WATER, CORN SYRUP, CONTAINS LESS THAN TWO PERCENT SALT, POTASSIUM LACTATE, SODIUM PHOSPHATES, FLAVORINGS, SODIUM DIACETATE, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), SODIUM NITRITE, EXTRACTIVES OF PAPRIKA"
For a bargain brand, currently selling for $0.68 per pack at W**m*rt (in my area), the Bar-S Frank consists of
"Mechanically Separated Chicken, Water, Pork, Modified Corn Starch, Dextrose, Salt, Beef, Contains 2% or less of the following: Corn Syrup, Flavorings, Sodium Phosphates, Potassium Lactate, Sodium Diacetate, Sodium Erythorbate, Paprika, Oleoresin of Paprika, Sodium Nitrite"
when a frank has more salt than beef, you have to wonder.
