snakes are used to living areas getting cold at night, though I keep my UTH (under tank heater) on all the time. I do recommend a heating pad under the cage and a light. then when you wake up till you go to sleep keep the light on (or dawn till dusk)all 60 watt UVB light then of course water and hide there is nothing special you need to do to the substrate keep it about a half or full inch thick. there is no specific time you need to turn it on, or you could turn the heat on now it really doesn't matter it would just waste electricity.

I save the warmth mat on each and all the time for my garter, yet she's a southern subspecies (Florida blue) and my living house continues to be very chilly. make certain you have a sturdy warmth gradient (one part heat and one part cool) and a minimum of one hiding spot on the two aspects so the snake can experience guard and guard the right temp. Horsey: Snakes easily would desire to be waiting to quiet down or they'll DIE. they'd get warmth stroke or warmth exhaustion much greater definitely than a mammal--they want a GRADIENT of cool and heat so they'd digest and metabolize, not warmth 24/7. Toni F: Garter snakes do not stay interior the barren area.

you are suppose to leave the heat source on at all times. there are two ends of the cage one side is suppose to have water and a hide away and the other is suppose to have the heat source (I would recomend a heat lamp) and another hide away. also have something for them to climb on. and one more thing make sure you have clmps on the top of the cage or you might have a loose snake roaming your home.

leave the heat source on all the time. You should use an under tank heat pad set to the correct temperature.
