This song was originally written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry. It's about a girl who was kicked out of her home by her sick and destitute mother. She becomes a prostitute and then marries a rich man and moves into a big mansion. Basically, it was about someone who came from dire circumstances but was able to overcome them and make something of herself.

Omigosh so this is one of my favorite songs. I think it is simply one of those songs that tells a story. The story is simple an impoverished girl is "turned out" by her mother and in the end she rises above her tragic beginnings to a woman who is made, toughened by life, and not gonna be subject to the opinions of others who don't agree with her journey.
