I have a 2004 Ford Focus and I have had if for a year now. Recently it has been idling really high and making things vibrate in the car..like my change in the ash tray. I took it into the recommendend auto repair place and they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle, but of course a hose broke and tons of other things were wrong and they wanted to charge me to hook it up to a machine. What can I do?

Technically speaking, it could be hundreds of things. More commonly, especially on a newer vehicle, you could suspect things like: broken vacuum hose (or intake leak before mass airflow sensor), faulty or malfunctioning sensor (idle-air control, intake air temperature, etc...). Is there a check engine light on? More than likely there is and if not, it will come on soon after the computer recognizes a problem. I am a automotive electrical technician and have been working with cars most of my life. This is a common problem but most of the time its a relatively inexpensive thing to take care of... most of the time. If your check engine light is on, you should take it to go get it scanned (Autozone or Oreillys will do this for free) and this will give you a general idea of where to start. Please keep me informed as to what you find for I love challenges! Good luck!

The coil packs won't make it idle high, and although they could theoretically cause it not to start. It is more likely if your engine is the 4 cylinder, which has only two packs, rather than the six cylinder models which have three packs. However, blaming it on the coil packs is a wild guess. A more likely suspect, based on the symptoms is a large vacuum leak. That will cause the idle to be fast and lean, eventually reaching the point where it won't fire. If starting fluid makes it fire for a moment, or even start, a lean idle mixture is very likely. The usual culprits are cracked PCV or brake booster hoses. A bad Mass Air Flow sensor can cause lean mixture but not the high idle. I doubt the timing chain (all the engines used in the '01 Grand Am were timing chain driven) would cause the high idle. Chains invariably jump in the direction to retard the timing, which causes hard start or no start but also a low idle. If it is a vacuum leak fixing it should make a big difference in the way the engine runs, and it should be affordable enough. If not a leak it is time to take stock and decide how to go with it.

Sounds you needs to replace All the Vacuum Lines, Check the MAP, Throttle Position & o2 Sensors, Clean and Adjust the Throttle Body! Check your Catolytic Converter to make sure it's not coming apart and creating Excess Back Pressure in the Exhaust System! Cat. is where Most Sensor Problems Start!

Sounds like there may be a vacuum hose lose or broken. Take it to a repair that is reputable and they will tell you what is the matter with it without charging you.

The person who answered above me might be right but I doubt it. Go to the auto parts store and purchase a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) and try it. They should be able to show you where it goes and it is easily replaced for about 5.00

my car did the same thing a month ago. It idled big time every time it shifted (and i have a automatic). I have a really honest mechanic (rare). He also explains to me how he discovered the problems and what he does to fix it (though i can never remember cuz i'm a girl).

Anyway, if you feel weird about giving them money after they said nothing wrong with it, i'd check out another place who can say right off whether there may be something wrong with it just by listening to the engine or going with you on a test drive first. Good luck

It either has a vacume leak(bad maybe vacume hose) or a bad throttle position sensor.
