I have to disagree with the person who said a cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide' was more famous than the original.

Having looked closer at some of the other answers here, I get the feeling a lot of them are from American music lovers, as several of the covers listed have never been big here in the UK.
For example, 'You Really Got Me' is still most famous as a Kinks song here {though there is a great cover by Robert Palmer}.

How about "You Really Got Me". The Van Halen cover I think got bigger than the Kinks (superior) original, at least around here.
Neither are really famous but "Hanging On The Telephone" was originally done by the Nerves and Blondie has the better known version.
I don't know the name of the person who wrote "Train Kept A Rollin'" but the Yardbirds version is more famous than his, and Aerosmiths' version is more famous than theirs.
The Jam's version of "David Watts" I'm assuming is more famous because I've heard it in commercials and other things, original by the Kinks.
It's just barely a cover but Led Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song" is much more famous than the song it's a reworking of, Howling Wolf's "Killing Floor".
Lynyrd Skynyrd's version of "Call Me The Breeze" is better known than J.J. Cale's original, but I could go on and on about covers of his songs, but I'll suffice it to add "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" done by Clapton.
The Clash have the most famous version of "I Fought The Law" I think? Or at least more famous than Sonny Curtis's. But Bobby Fuller's version is up there too.
The Hendrix cover of "All Along The Watch Tower" as mentioned has eclipsed the Dylan version partly.
The Clash's version of "Police & Thieves" is also heard more often than Junior Murvin's.
Even though its been mentioned, and I don't know that it's the original, I just wanted to say that the Leaves' version is by far the best version of "Hey Joe".
