All animals, including humans, have an instinct to survive. Being corrupt is just a product of that because as humans become more and more overpopulated they need to be more clever in ensuring their survival.
Also, other humans are seen as competition for natural resources. Therefore the more selfish they are, the more resources they can obtain.
So in a way, humans have evolved from a species that would band together for survival to a species that backstabs each other in an effort to get more resources for themselves.
Being corrupt is just a way for some people to gain an unfair advantage over honest people.

As others have said, money, power, greed, pride, lack of integrity, etc. I would also add selfishness, indecency, lack of accountability, irresponsibility. The list could go on.
I disagree with the bit about corruption being human nature. Definitely not instinct that drives people to want to obtain more wealth. More like human conditioning.

POWER, simple as that. It can be in the form of money or influence, or simply power over individuals.
Corruption isn't just down to the politicians it is displayed in everyday life by people who posses power no matter how large or small.

People are corrupt because they have chosen to prioritize money and power higher than doing what is right. Everyone has a priority "ladder," if you will, of their values. Corrupt people have put money and control higher than honesty and personal integrity on their ladder. It's that simple.
