It doesn't allow the waste to get back into the water because new bubbles are always being produced beneath the old ones, so any material adhering to the outside of the bubbles is forced upward and outward. Or at the very least, they go up to the lid of the collection container and stick to it.

That is, unless you forget to empty the cup and it overflows. Then any material not adhering to the sides goes back into your water.

You can get lots of plans online if you google "DIY protein skimmer". You're not the only cheap aquarist that likes to build things, by far.

How long has your tank been working? what's the fish load in it? what share gallons is it? Seaclones are regularly talked approximately as Seaclowns because of the fact they don't seem to be considered the better of skimmers. they are on the low end of the dimensions and can't take care of maximum jobs. i'm sorry for the cruel evaluate, even though it is one that is incredibly regarded interior the activity. FYI, it could additionally take in to 2 weeks to break in a sparkling skimmer. So if your tank is small (decrease than 10g) and you have a low bioload (one or 2 fish) then wait it out. BTW, what do you hold your particular gravity at? a respectable skimmer for a small tank will nevertheless run you $a hundred twenty five+ swimmer

The collection cup is where the collected waste accumulate. This is supposedly to be emptied from time to time to remove waste (the dirty, brown foam). Some manufacturer of protein skimmer add drain tube in the cup.. this is for the lazy s.o.b. who don't want the hassle of emptying the cup almost every day (depending on how much dirt your skimmer removes, you may have to empty it every day). You connect another plastic tube on the drain tube into a large container. This way you can go without emptying the cup for weeks at a time.
