do you mean the first public school? Or the first school in general. Universities have existed for centuries....they were invented basically to train people in religion or law. Some existed to breed philosophers. Plato ran a school (or was it Aristotle...I can't remember). Anyway, they have existed for a LONG time.

Jefferson was also a huge fan of the university. So even in America they go back to our earliest days!

If you mean public schools like elementary and high school, they were pretty much created in the 1800s to bring up people with morals and to be good political leaders. They were not intended for everyone like they are today

The day was July 4, 1848 and the Lockport Union School, Lockport, NY, was opened. It was a "first" in local education, and as it turns out, perhaps a worldwide first. Before the opening of this public high school, built at a cost to the taxpayers of $15,000, those who wished education beyond the elementary level had to pay to attend a private school. It is now believed to be the first public high school in the United States, if not the world.

Although it was public school, the Union School still charged a very modest tuition. $2 per semester for junior residents and $3 per semester for senior residents. Non-residents were charged $3 (juniors) and $4 (seniors) per semester. There were also some extra charges for certain subjects: Latin and Greek $1 each; French $1.50; German, Italian, and Spanish $2.50; Drawing or Painting $2; Bookkeeping 50-cents; Music $8; and Piano $2
Everything later became free tuition.

That would greatly depend on how you define school. Even the Old Testament book of Daniel references it, and the problems parents had with private versus public education. Our modern public schools got their start in Prussia, in the early 19th century by King Frederick William III. In America, John Dewey is regarded as the father of public schools, and his ideas were created in the early 20th century. Most of them point to the Byzantines. They were said to be the first people on earth to come up with the idea of a school system.

It is doubtful that we will ever know the answer to when the first school was opened.

It was either Aristotle or Plato who had a school and that was not the first. In all probability a group of cave children were taught "homemaking" skills by a mother and a group of cave children were taught hunting or gathering skills by one of the fathers. That of course is a guess.
