Nobody likes war, nobody wants it, but freedom and change only come from decisive victory. History is the best teacher. What would I say to a WWII vet alive today?--nothing, they are too humble to except thanks. They saw their service as their duty. I would simply thank them by treating them how they should be treated--like the greatest generation.

My father fought the North Sea battles as a Royal Navy officer in WWII and although highly decorated, he never wore his medals or marched in a parade and never spoke about his experiences (to me anyway). I know his ship was blown up by German U-boats and he saw his men burning to death. His face and an eye were ripped open when pulled from the freezing water. Somehow a medic managed to save his eye. I recall as a child he would wake up retching every morning and have terrible nightmares from war neurosis. He was also in Japan with the Americans and witnessed the effects of Hiroshima soon after the devastation. Apparently a recent study shows that only 15% of combat soldiers dont have a problem killing someone in front of them. WWII was different because we were fighting facism and it was a desperate situation to actually save the world as we know it. If the mad men had won many of us would not exist or we would be slaves. The Germans were very close to using missiles which their scientists were racing to develop to annhialate our forces. My father told me : 'race and religion divide the world' and its so true; Unless we as a species can rise above this to a new level of harmonious co-existence with each other and nature we are doomed. His generation were also idealistic and I wish there were more like them around these days.
Bless them all & thanks Dad...miss you.

war is bad , bad for the soul bad for the nation people think guns and knifes stabbing and shooting is good BUT IT ISN'T nothing good comes out of war except deaths what happens to the losers?what happens to the winners sure we get the pride but what if we get so over confident that we actually get into a war thinking OF COURSE we will win and then lose all our rights not just as Americans but as people. peace and war is the answer justice is great but to get justice u have to fight. and if that's the case id rather be dragged down with the self satisfaction that i know that what i believe in , wasn't going to be let down by the man...

peace, love, god save our souls from this retched place we call life

i would say im against war until it becomes completely necessary. there are times when it simply has to happen. veterans from wwII fought with honor for a great cause and should be respected for all they sacrificed.

i mean war is a sad thing but sometimes in order to free others you must sacrifice lives...its the plain truth...but never forget those soldiers, like in iraq, are heros
