I'm in my mid twenties, newly wed, and a college grad. I have NEVER been able to skake sucking my thumb since I was in the womb. My teeth arn't crooked, I'm not over weight, I always wash my hands, I don't suck it in public, it's not a sexual thing, and I don't have weird issues, in fact I'm in a nearly successful rock band. Its an addictive habit I have that makes me feel good. I feel like I comfort myself. I do it when I'm watching t.v., when I drive (windows are tinted), when I sleep, and especially when I cry or I am sad. I feel really good! Before I married, I told my hubby what I do and his responce was "thats better than smoking, I hate cigarettes!" and "OMG, you look sooo hot and sooo cute!" Besides my hubby and my mother knowing, no one I know personally knows I do it.
I would love to know people who are older as I am that do it also. I'd like to know others whom I can relate to!

Thanks for all your "POSITIVE" responces. I don't wanna quit, and hell, I'd tell everyone and there mom if I could. But something like that is not to accepted in the general population. I don't why, but it isn't. For the people both girls and guys who suck their thumbs, you guys rock!

My mum didn't give up sucking her thumb until she was 38, she's 40 now and she still does it sometimes!
Loads of people know of it, as she's not ashamed of it. All my friends and stuff know about it and she's totally open about it cuz it's normal.
I have a friend, he's 14, he still sucks his thumb when he sleeps, it's cute tho, lol. 14 year old are the most judgemental people, and no-one minds that he sucks his thumb and he doesn't mind. People your age aren't as judgemental, they seem to see what's on the inside more.
But one thing I would like to tell you, is when sucking your thumb, don't rub your eyelashes if you do, cuz your eyelashes will fall out and won't grow back.

People have told me that human behavior does not change until they are under a threat. So a good idea is to take a picture of yourself sucking your thumb, go to Costco or somewhere to blow up the picture REALLY huge, then hang it up in your office or where you work. And if you don't work, hang it up at home where everyone can see. So whenever you suck your thumb, think about how disgusting you look in the picture.
Just an idea...so if anyone disagrees, don't bash on me. I wouldn't know because I never sucked my thumb. Or...just find something better to do! You're only going to suck your thumb when your mind is empty and when you have nothing better to do, right? I mean, when you're chatting online on the computer, I doubt you have your thumb in your mouth.

Nothing weird about that. I still have the teddy bear I was given when I was born. It accidentally got lost in the prop rooms of my high school for a few weeks, and I could barely sleep without it. Same concept, really. Almost everyone retains one or two "childish" habits or quirks into adulthood, be it a stuffed animal, blanket, or thumbsucking. Don't worry about it. :)

well i am only 13.............so not as old as you probably can't relate to me much but i sucked my thumb from the time i was born to about 3rd grade. I would still be sucking my thumb now but my parents(because they where concerned about my teeth) had this thumb Gard put at the top of my mouth in kindergarten to stop me from sucking my thumb. I had it taken off in first grade but put back on in third grade because i began sucking my thumb again. I can relate some what though when you said sucking your thumb helps you when your crying or sad. It put me at ease to when i was younger to suck my thumb.

I use to suck my thumb, but I stopped when I was about 10. If it's not affecting you teeth or your health, I personally don't see anything wrong with it. It's a mere habit. Suck away!

I totally understand, I couldn't stop sucking my thumb for the longest time too. But, your lucky if it isnt screwing up your teeth, I stopped when I heard I would have to get braces if I didn't stop. I wish I could still do it, I agree it's very comforting.

My dear, I think it is time for you to take the thumb out of the mouth...It don't matter how cute you think it is...Its' not cute at all. YOU say your mother and husband know, soo.....why haven't they talked to you about it. I bet you are going to find others that do it also but that still doesn't make it okay... Get yourself some life savers and suck away. . . .
