lol.. I've done something very similar to that..although I thought for sure I knew the people in the car...so i decided to wave and smile.. turns out it wasn't even who I thought it was...but two complete strangers.. my mom was with me that day..but I never told her it wasn't them.
And yes,I've seen little kids on a bus wave at me..and i waved and smiled back.

Yes, I suppose it has happened to most of us. I always just smile bigger and usually say something along the lines of, "Can I share in the waving?" They smile back and say anything from "Sure. Hi." to "Of course...and keep waving." There is no need to be embarassed...just let them know that you are friendly. That's what the wave is all about anyway.

that sucks and yea i have but then i kinda pretend to be waving at someone else lol. what sucks even more is giving someone a high five when thats not what they actually wanted. when i am corrected for that i just say whatever i didnt know lol

Happens all the time.
And when people are actually waving at ME, I always check behind me, then wave back.
