The football is called a ball because it is thrown, caught, and used for activities identical to that of a ball. Notice a ball's shape is never truly defined. though we assume it to be relativley rounded, it is never specified as a sphere or anthing else.

ball 1: a round or roundish body or mass: as a: a spherical or ovoid body used in a game or sport.
sounds like it meets the criteria to be called a ball. plus technically it is not called a ball it is called a football.

A ball is NOT round once you hit it with something. Check out slow-mo replays. They all bend and move. A Football is just stuck oblong.

It's simple really. But first let me ask you this. What does the M on the dolphins helmet stand for. Mexico. You see originally, The Dolphin was wearing a sombrero and on the Sombrero had a map of Cuba pictured on it(and the ball was round). To intimidate the opposition, they put the "M" on it. The M stood for "Montana" (Tony "M"ontana) But when Joe "M"ontana came into the league it confused everybody. People started thinking that Joe "M"ontana had a coke problem and their were ruomores that he was packing heat under his shoulder pads. People in the State of "M"ontana did not like the reference and passed Prop. 187 to outlaw Cubans, "M"exicans and People from San Francisco (homophobic).
In the 1984 Superbowl, Joe "M"ontana put an "m" on the back of his helmet to mock the dolphins. The tricked worked and he smoked "M"arino 38-16(with a round ball).
Marino(pissed off) met Commish(yahoo user) and have been in cahoots doing dastardly deeds. Most recently Marino placed a green dot on the back of every QB's helmet to leave his mark.
Marino has recently befriended Troy Aikman and they built a time machine to go back in time to chance the shape of a football to "football" shaped not round to see if he could beat Montana. Didn't work.

Probably for the same reason they call boxing areas 'rings' when they are actually square.
