The reason that JaMarcus Russell isn't playing is because first of all, he spent most of the offseason negotiating for his rookie contract. He finally signed his contract on September 10, which made him miss the whole preseason, and not have the oppurtunity to battle for his job. Second, because he's a rookie, and most teams are against starting rookie players right away, the Raiders will probably just use Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper this year and then give him the job next year.

He has had to learn the system, which - due to his holdout - has meant training camp along with the regular system. Reports are he may see some starting action sometime during this second half of the season.

He's not playing because Coach Kiffin doesn't think he's ready to play. Even if he did, it wouldn't make a difference. The Raiders are AWFUL!

spent too much time negotiating his salary and therefore missed a bunch of practice, etc.
he'll see playing time at the end of the season tho.
