If the arena is shared by say the New York Rangers
(NHL season Opend October 4th)
& The NY knicks (their NBA schedule says they start Novemeber 11th)
as Madison Sqaure Garden is then yes.. BUT.. These 2 sports have pretty much the same season as you can see by the starting schedules!
Some arena's (Like the NJ Devils New Prudential arena ) are only (or will only be) used for that one team & Concerts, being that some teams are now having their practice rinks put in their arena so that time is not wasted w/ Equipment being lugged back & forth to the arena & practice rinks)

The Los Angeles Kings play hockey on an ice rink that is below the basketball court that the Lakers and the Clippers use at the Staples Center.

Hockey is the basis for building an arena and the configuration is such that by covering the ice with a basket ball floor one gets more use from the facility. Where dual use is involved both teams work their schedules so that their home games wont conflict. Both sports are played at the same time of the year.

Generally yes. Here in Denver they lay the wood floor over the ice. We've even had the ice sort of soft for an Avalanche game, because there was a Nuggets game earlier in the day!

If you mean community rinks, the few in my area either keep the ice plant for the summer or are used for in-line hockey leagues.

Probably not. Even when hockey isn't in season, they still hold practice. It also depends on the rink as well, if it's iced or not.

not here...ice is kept in year round at most of the rinks...when not at a few of the smaller ones, the space is used for dances, craft shows, etc...but not basketball
