I was a Social worker at one time and went to Sr's homes to conduct assessments. Many of these folks had police scanners to find out what was going on in their area. One woman told me she felt relieved when she heard sirens and would hear what it was about.

I listened to scanners for year. I learned all of the
codes and the frequencies. The problem was that most of the police switched over to digital signals. So, I could listen to the police activity in the next town over, but not my own.

Personally, I loved listening to my scanner--particually when I traveled to NYC. I found it interesting. Last Summer there was a huge fire in the NJ Pinelands. I had heard sirens and put on my scanner.. It was one of the largest fires and I learned early on that my area was being evacuated.

You should get onto some of the scanner chat groups. You learn a lot from these people.

There are a few people in my family who do, my sister-in-law has listened for years....I'm into talk radio myself....I like Dennis & Judy on 101.5. The thing that bothers me about police scanners is that you don't hear the whole conversation...and that bugs me !!!!!!!!

I cant stand the incessant chatter and squawking of those things. I envy people who can though and get all the latest gossip from them. I just get a headache.
