A unlock cell phone means that the software on that cell phone has been changed so you can use that cell phone on any specific network. If you buy a GSM unlocked phone that means you can use that phone on either A T&T Wireless or T-Mobile network and not be stuck with only one carrier. GSM phones requires a sim card on the back of their cell phones, such as A T&T Wireless and T-Mobile.

If you buy a unlock CDMA cell phone that means you can use that cell phone on either Sprint or Verizon Wireless. Both of these carriers use CDMA network. No sim card is required for these phones.
