Portraits are, by far, my most difficult challenge. With most other type of illustration, there is a good range of artistic license allowed, so, I am free to create poses and situations as I see fit.
But with a portrait, the likeness has to be exact, or it is not a successful portrait. While I have a pretty good discipline for realistic depictions, in no other forms do EXACT features and placements have to be so critical. From the earliest ages, even infants learn to recognize very specific facial features, and they can tell when it is NOT mommy, but aunt Jane in front of them.
I, once, had a client that wanted me to paint a portrait of her two poodles. I worked, as I often do, from a photograph. When I presented the final work to her she was disappointed. She said that I had captured one of the dogs perfectly, but the other was "all wrong." I did two other attempts at it, but never got the second dog right. I finally had to give her back her deposit.
And this was for two dogs! Imagine the difficulty of capturing the liknesses of human beings.
On the other hand, I do cartoons and characatures of people, and, I'm told I often "got it EXACTLY right!"

I would have to say the most difficult thing I've attempted is my wife. I say attempted because I've never finished one drawing. Other people I can do but her, I just can't do her justice. It's like it has to be better than perfect, it has to be her on paper and for some reason I just can't get her down. I'll figure it out someday.

I've drawn for many years and found that drawing portraits is probably the hardest. I've since moved on to painting what i draw. My art can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro'' in the local artists section.

Yes, I do draw. :)
The most difficult thing for me to draw is humans.
I am better at drawing animals (dogs, dragons, etc).
