A horse is like a psychic mirror, because he shows you what you are projecting to him. This sometimes works better as therapy than a whole team of psychiatrists.
To understand what I am saying if you have never spent much time with horses, there is a great book "It's not about the Horse" by Wyatt Webb.

rolls eyes when afraid
flatten ears when disturbed
will kic if one comes from behind or along side where it cannot see them
has foels
froths at the mouth if run to hard
skin lathers when run to hard
needs cooling off by walking it around after a long hard run
whinnies
struggles hard if caught in wire,etc to extent it will do serious leg damage
terrified of fire and screams and kicks in it's terror
knows it's way home if rider falls off and is hurt
can become vicious if not treated right and has to be retrained
understands verbal and body (knee)commands
