I would sit him down and tell him that boys who keep touching themselves in public make other people uncomfortable because they think that the need to use the bathroom. Most kids this age don't want anyone to ever think that they might still wet their pants. Tell him you know it is something that he may do because he is nervous and that you will clear your throat or give him some other sign that you agree upon if you see him do this. Encourage him to put his hands in his pockets when he is feeling selfconcious so he doesn't embarrass himself. If he were a bit younger I would agree that he might be doing that to feel good , but a ten year old is just usually overcome by nervousness.

It is important not to shame him, and make him feel bad about his body. This could cause self-esteem issues. But it is also not appropriate to do this with others around, or in public. So tell him that if he wants to do that he can do it in the bathroom, or in his bedroom. That way he has an appropriate place to do it. Also tell him that this is something private, and he should never do it outside of the house or in front of someone.

my 12 year old had a habbit of that when he was around that age possibly about to turn 11. being his dad I had the 'terrible task' of having to explain to him that if he has the urge to touch himself down there he has to not do it infront of anyone and to do it somewhere like in his room or the bathroom and just told him its perfectly normal and means he is growing up. he pretty much new about sex then anyway from school but i explained to him and listened to his questions and it worked quite well for the little guy and we gave him more privacy in his room as all boys do it from about that age onwards if not younger.

Why would you want him to not do it? It's completely normal and I'll bet anything that you do it yourself. I mean, people deny it, but everyone masturbates and just doesn't admit it. I mean you can talk to him about it and tell him to just do it somewhere in private, but don't completely discourage him, if you've see the Seinfeld episode "Master of the Domain" you'll understand why. (Or if you really must discourage him make him watch an episode of Jerry Springer, but I wouldn't recommend that.)
