I've got a DeVilbiss 5000 watt power generator. The engine runs fine but it won't generate any power. The circuit breakers are good. I've checked for voltage coming right out of the stator and there's only 2.5V coming off of the 120V side and 5V coming out of the 240V side of the stator windings. The stator winding resistance reads a couple ohms for each winding. I checked the capacitor and it checks right on at 35uF. I checked the stator diode and it checks good. Anyone have a clue what else I can check?
Thanks.

It's a brushless generator head btw. :)

The DeVilbiss 5kW generator does not use brushes. It may have lost residual magnetism in the fields. From my generator page, try this...

If the engine is working fine, but there is no output voltage try this trick. It may work on standard alternator type generators, but not on those which use an inverter. It worked for me in the past, but try at your own risk. First check to ensure that all circuit breakers and fuses are ok. Shut off the engine and remove any cords from the generator. Plug in a cord with bare wires on the other end to one of the 120VAC outlets. Connect one end of the cord to a car battery. Very quickly touch the other wire to the other battery terminal. Do not leave it there longer than to create a few sparks or you may destroy the windings. If the residual magnetism in the alternator had weakened, this may be enough to get it started again.

Check the #11, # 22, and the #44 wire comming off the stator to the case. To see if the stator is shorting to ground.
Also check continuity from wire #11 to #22, and from #22 to #44 there should be good continuity between these combinations of connections.
If this doesn't help, contact me. (one more thing to try)
PS; Smacking the generator with a hammer *WILL* damage the permanent magnets inside.

I agree it may have brushes....try rapping the side with a hammer lightly....not too much just a tap and see if the output changes

I agree that smack it with a hammer would do damage....you will notice I said " rap lightly" and not too much. I stand corrected.

If it's under warranty still the retailer should be able to look at it for you. regards.
