Is it fairly common to have to replace a EGR valve on a 99 Pontiac GrandPrix 3.8?? Had it cleaned once and mechanic said next time it would need replacing. Back in the old V8 days a EGR valve was seldom a problem. Plus its like $150 at Advance and almost double that at GM dealer!!!!

Yes,it's common.Digital E G R valves are alot more complicated than the simpler ones of yesteryear. Not just vacuum but also electronic and exposed to higher temperatures.

Most of the time its not the EGR Valve, this something else. Do you no what code or codes were found ? I've seen the O-ring missing on the PVC valve alot and this trips a EGR code, Check the PVC Valve for the O-Rings or when the engines ruining open the oil cap and check to see if theres a large vacuum there. If so the O-ring is missing.

Check engine light code is key and crummy idle quality. My 1997 GTP had egr act up twice and I cleaned it each time ans lubricated the steeper motor that controls the opening and closing with graphite. 165,000 miles and counting.
