I have to use it for my homework and it's the LAMEST thing ever because we weren't told what it was.....

Since this is posted in the biology portal, I'd assume that to be referring to the male/female chromosomes.

X is the "basic/template" chromosome. 2 of those (XX) would result in a female cell or organism.

Y is the "male" chromosome when referring to humans. XY would thus result in a male cell or organism.

There are unique cases where humans don't follow these rules. XXX will result in a disabled female (and not some weird porn!) XYY results in a male with excessive male features such as height and muscle mass. Some say it causes excessive aggression too. Just think of a really tall Hulk who isn't green (although some call it the superman syndrome =p)

Hope you get to enjoy biology in future! When you start to read up on your own and understand it it will become easier and much more enjoyable. =)

PS. The male/female or good/bad "system" in chinese is in fact Yin and Yang, NOT xin and yang. =p

The X and Y symbol system refers to notation in the form of X+Y=Z

for example:
Hydrogen + Oxygen = Water
