Take money (in the shape of a bank card and get your cash from an ATM or a credit card for the expensive things,) your passport and a raincoat.

This site has good lists on what you can do:
http://www.amsterdam.info/

Follow the internal links for museums, sights, nightlife and so on, for your kind of entertainment.
They will give you many places to go and links to the own websites of the places (in English) if they have one.

For museums, select one or two that attract you the most.
There are several that show the Amsterdam houses as they used to be, one of them even has a church hidden: http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/museum_amstelkring/
Amsterdam has museums on as unlikely things as pianolas, glasses, bags and cats, if the subject of your hobby is not listed on this site, google for it, just add museum Amsterdam to the subject and see what it comes up with.

Of course, all mayor art styles/periods have a museum in Amsterdam:

Shopping inAmsterdam can be fun, many people like the area round Kalverstraat, others prefer the PC Hooftstraat, and some insist on going to the 'nine streets'

And of course there are all the things all tourists seem to like, the coffeeshops, red light districs, diamont factories and holland experience.

Go to the Van Googh museum, as well as the Anne Frank museum.
Just wander along the canals and visit the cafes.
Amsterdam is a compact city, you will be able to get around easily.
A visit to the Red Light District is illuminating!

Have a fantastic time!

Go to the Anne Frank museum - amazing to be in the attic where she and her family hid for such a long time - then buy her diary - i had never heard of her 'til I visited Amsterdam - I think there's supposed yo be an awsome 'madame tusauds' too
