At 6 months onwards my boys were eating mashed vegetables like potato, pumpkin, peas etc. - anything that can be pureed with no bits. Also fruit purees (usually apple) and baby custards. I have to admit I rarely made anything myself as the baby food you can buy is usually excellent and convenient and I had my children 12 months apart so was too busy! Now they are over 1 year old I can blend anything that I cook for my older son but my little one who is 12 months old still only likes the mushiest foods with no texture and is so reluctant to try new things so get your 8 month old in to as many things as you can which are safe for this age. Bananas are great - cut a chunk that is large enough to hold in his/her little hand, and crackers or really plain biscuits are a good start to finger foods. Some things they say you should avoid until they are 1 year old, and babies usually like quite bland things anyway.

The jarred baby food. But if he/she can chew anything mashed bananas and mashed peas would be good. 8-10 months is the perfect time to introduce the child to solid foods or semi-solid foods. Just not spicy things because their digestive systems are not ready for that yet. I wouldn't give cereals unless they are like oatmeal. Cereals like Cheerios would probably be better after the child is one year old.

Pretty much anything he can chew or you can mouli for him. Esp good are the gerber oatmeal cereal and rice cereal. Now's the time to introduce finger foods like Cheerios, crackers, banana pieces, cheese, scrambled eggs.

I wouldn't feed him something spicy or gassy, but my kids were eating lasagna (mashed up) by their first birthdays.
