Why is it that they have to abort one? In both of the cases I know about with one twin that died.. the twin that died and the twin that lives stay in the womb until full term. At which point the mother gave birth to both the twin that passed and the twin that survived. Perhaps your friend might want to get a second opinion.

Yes the other one can make it. Although they are twins, they are two different people with two different cords. As long as the doctor carefully aborts the right one, the other should be okay. You will probally have to have alot of checkups just to make sure the other baby is okay. Their is a small chance it could effect the other one, but think for the best:)

yes the other one can make it, and a lot of times this does happen. as sad as it sounds, a lot of times, one twin is significanlty healthier than the other twin because it "steals" all the nutrients that both babies need to live on. If everything seems ok with the other baby and there isn't a significant problem with that cord, I would say the baby has a good chance of survival.

good luck to your friend, my thoughts are with her during this hard time. I can't imagine what she is going through!

It sadly happens quite a lot. Humans were not designed to carry more than one baby at a time, therefore when there are multiples it is a fluke and things happen. Its really sad, but plenty of women have gone through it and have perfectly healthy babies that were previously a twin.

In some horrendously sad occurrences the mother and doctor must chose which baby to abort because they cannot both survive, but one can.

Its really sad and Im sorry your friend has to go through that:(
