An unbroken heart is an unused heart that has not yet learned to be open, even if it doesn't appear 'practical'. Sooner or later we'll all have open hearts!

Broken opportunities and wasted youth are real. A broken heart is a decision of irreplaceable loss and deep embarrassment. The unbreakable heart has already been invented. It is owned by people who realize they make decisions and can unmake decisions.

You are talking about 'ego'. The heart is an organ but we've learned to refer to the tender part of the ego as the heart. The ego is offended when confronted with a situation that does not meet it's expectation. If another ego devalues this ego, the ego tells the body that there is suffering when in reality it is vanity as the ego wishes to be worshiped and when this reverence is not received it is offended. Thus the term 'broken heart'.

to me something is practical if it serves its purpose, so perhaps the purpose of the heart, in the emotional sense, is to feel both pain and joy,
