School should DEFINITELY encourage children to explore different media in order to express themselves in their own ways. In elementary school, I felt that I was horrible in art until I came upon charcoal, which was not available to me until fifth grade--the last year of elementary school! Still, it was not enough! My teacher required that we draw a still life. Motionless, lifeless objects could not express my preteen angst.
When children are given art assignments, they should not be expected to be graded on the proportions of noses to faces and eyes. They should not be expected to copy Michaelangelo's art, and be graded on its authenticity. I feel that an art teacher should give the students a subject, and then for the students to use whichever medium (and style within that medium) that they wish, to express their feelings.
Art is oppressing when you have no room for expression, only strict rules of how to draw.

I think it's important for a school to teach the difference and help students try different styles. This way the student can learn what's out there and have more ammunition to express themselves in unique and personal ways.

Yes it is important they are both artists and children need to know who changed the world. When they do know they might come up with a plan to change the world, go study.

Studying the Masters is recommended not so that we can copy them, only the mediocres do that. You spend time on the works of the great, understand their individual styles, note their use of colours, light and shade and so on. Then go on to evolve your own, individual, unique and, hopefully, great style. All the best.

I think children should know who these people are to a piont. But expressing yourself in your own unique way creates good diversity.

I think you first must explore all areas of art then from there you can learn how to develop your own unique style.

art is for the creative...you study what appeals to YOU, and if further study is necessary, you see what others did. There is no right and wrong answer here.
