Syd Barret and Roger Waters - Pink Floyd
Maynard James Keenan - Tool

Syd because his head was so open, o.k, he had abit of help from certain chemicals, however if YOU have an open mind then you can see where he was coming from. As for Roger, well his look of life is so true. He writes about the things most people wont admit to. Both legends.
As for Maynard, one of the most underrated musicians of the past decade. Very clever and very complex lyrics. Not only that an amazing singer, both c.d and live.

I know the most common answers will be Dylan & Lennon, but unless you have the lyrics in front of you how could you understand ANY of Dylans words? He is the WORST singer to ever walk on the face of the planet!! Lennon was ok for being a member of the original boy band. Seriously, think about it, what band got the 12 year old girls more worked up the the beatles?
My answer would be Tori Amos. I agree that shes a little odd but like her or not, her lyrics are very deep and personal.

Well, Bob Dylan has already been mentioned, so I would say :~

Ian Anderson

His lyrics are mostly observances of life, but they're dressed up in the music and presentation in such a way that you don't think of them as philosophy until you look deeper into them.

Stevie Nicks

Her lyrics take real life experiences and sprinkle a hint of the mystical to turn them into something that has different meaning to everyone.

The one and only Bob Dylan

"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" - Subterranean Homesick Blues
"Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while"
