I'm new to watching college football, so please help me understand this: Ohio state might finish the season 11-1, ans there is only one top team that is undefeated (Kansas 9-0)... So why is Ohio State out of contention for the national title? The other teams, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, have all lost one game, too, and have played less games, so have actually won less games than OSU. Shouldn't they be #2 behind Kansas and play them for the title? I just don't understand why their chance of playing for the title is now gone. Thanks!

Because they haven't beaten a top caliber team all year.
It is all in the strength of schedule.

First of all - to the asinine answers coming from JamesK and DooDoo and Cowboy, etc... - they are just disrespectful people that would rather have their teams up at the top than answer your question nicely. (Also - all fumbles are supposed to be reviewed in the booth - you will see in coming days comments and rebukes from the conference on this). Because the BCS system is flawed and there is no playoff system, the later you lose in the season, the less of a chance you have to move up the so called ladder of respect that is the rankings. OSU IS a very good team (based on stats and despite the morons comments here). and the best teams do not always get the respect and place they deserve as many previous seasons have shown and even the extra game at this point doesn't matter, especially since the BIG TEN has no playoff in the conference. A shame really since they would have won out and won the title had they not lost focus and had a couple of calls go awry in the game that gave a good IIlini team a win they would not have had - if they had been called correct. The BCS uses 3 polls to determine ranks and using the internal bias of humans, rational thoughts of coaches and a computers analysis of stats to determine place. Eventually they will find a system that will work, but for now we have what we have.

They've beaten what, Purdue and Penn State? SEC teams play five or six conference games that tough or better. If you're vying for a slot against the SEC and PAC 10, you have to have a tough conference schedule or play top teams in those conferences or at least a couple of top Big 12 teams. Strength of schedule is a factor, and that will hurt OSU.

Ohio State just lost to Illinois - Illinois opened the season with a loss to Mizzou - Mizzou has one loss, to Oklahoma, but Oklahoma lost to Colorado (a team Mizzou demolished last week) - if "quality of opponent in a loss" means anything, Mizzou should be ranked 2nd, right behind unbeaten Kansas (and do NOT start about Hawaii)
Chase Daniels for Heisman, Mizzou will beat Kansas, then Oklahoma in Big 12 Championship, then go on to win BCS ... hide and watch

Wouldn't that be hilarious if OSU wins next week and the next two weeks after that all the contenders for the NC lose a game or two.. it has happened before, just ask Florida (both of their NC years, they backed into the game...) Florida State has done it before, USC, etc. etc..
But I am a realist, I fully expect the voters to punish OSU and send them all the way down past 10 in the polls. The pollsters have been drooling at the chance to do that all year!

Because they lost late in the season. Those other teams lost early and are able to rebuild their reputations. Also, the Big 10 doesn't have a championship game, so that's one less chance to show that their one loss was a fluke.

If I am honest with you, nobody knows....
The BCS has this complicated formula that takes into account certain things such as strength of schedule, margin of victory, etc
So when you lose this late in the season is usually hard to bounce back into the rankings.
I hope this helps a little bit...

The big reason one loss knocks them out is that the rest of their schedule was weak. If you play a weak schedule and beat everyone you might get the benefit of the doubt but when you play a weak schedule and lose it's the kiss of death.
There are a slew of one-loss teams that have played a tougher schedule.

These other teams had their loss earlier in the season & fought their way back up the ranks. For OSU, it's too late in the season

Well we should feel sorry for Ohio. They got cheated. Just ask em.
Illinois fumbled and recovered and played on.........Ohio did not call a time out .......Ohio did not call for review.......Ohio just whines now that it got cheated. I say if you cannot pay attention to what is going on in the game then you deserve to lose.

Our schedule sucks. The Big Ten sucks. The BCS sucks. We were just beaten by an unranked team. It's late in the season.
Next week should be fun, though.
