I'm a junior in an accredited university in the US mid-Atlantic region. I live in what is considered a medium sized city in the US. Currently I'm studying Information Systems. I have recently started an IT related job. However, it seems that the pay is a bit too low. I know I haven't graduated yet, but is $10.25 the best I can get for now? I know how to program (.net mostly) but haven't really had professional experience to prove it. Even though my current job does not currently entail programming, would I be better off trying for one that does (in my current situation)? The company I work for is a medium to large sized health insurance company.

Check other comparable jobs in your area. It's hard to answer when we don't have more information.

Meanwhile--- start building residual income to go with whatever else you decide to do with your career. Everyone should have an income that will pay them no matter what to see them through job changes, job losses, and eventually retirement.

$10.25 doesn't seem like a lot to me for IT work, but then again you didn't say what you are doing in IT. If you are answering phones then yes its probably what you are worth but if you are setting up computers and networking them and installing and configuring software on them then probably not. Of course it also depends on what state you live in and what location you are in that state that could tell you more about how much you are worth to companies.

When you get your degree you're skills will be more valuable to companies. So use this company as a starting point and learn all you can while you are there. Get more skills to make you look better to other companies.

Go to Salary.com and check out what you are worth.

Since you don't say what you are doing in your job, it's real hard to say whether or not it's a fair salary. Do other similar jobs in your area pay about the same? If so, then it's fair - if not, apply for one of the other similar jobs that pays higher.

You'll have a better chance at finding a programming job once you've finished your IT degree.

If you are in a call center or help desk, then your salary is normal with our without a college degree.

If you are programming or repairing computers, then it is on the low side. Health insurance industry in general pays low for high-tech jobs.

Salary.com is the best way to check out your salary for your area and industry.

My guess is that it's not a exceedingly paid place. The $9 the different guy predicted is probable approximately proper. on the VERY proper, it ought to be $11.00, rather because of the fact PA has greater salaries than WA.
