It wastes electricity to leave it on all of the time. Also, unless you have a good firewall the hackers will get to you and do their dirty deeds which they think are cute but are actually evil.

Leaving a computer on constantly produces alot of heat, and uses alot of electricity, not to mention how much wear it does on the hardware.

Shutting the laptop, is equal to putting a PC on stand-by, or sleep mode. I would probably suggest not leaving a computer on for more then 72 hours without at least a 8-10 hour break afterwards.

I would not recommend leaving it on. The reason is because it uses a lot of energy and unless you are rich and/or have not noticed the price of utilities has risen and continues to rise. It also can burn out your battery no matter how much your fans run. So what if it takes a little longer when you need to use your computer but wouldn't you rather wait a few extra minutes than have to fork up hundreds of dollars for a new one when it doesn't work because it burnt up? I don't know who told it to keep it on but they are incorrect.

I wouldn't say it's best to keep it on all of the time. Like all things, it's subject to degradation and eventual failure. If you're not going to be using it for days, turn it off. If it's going to be hours, put it on stand by.

For a laptop, closing the lid is just like putting it on standby. This can be disabled though. Laptops are a little more finicky. This is something that I would turn off if I'm not using or don't plan on using for a few hours.

Regards,

Brandon

Keeping your computer on for many hours will wear down your PC's life time. Usually PCs last for many years but if you keep it on a lot it will not last 5 years. My computer started to crash after 6 years for keeping it on. Trust me turn your computer off after 12 hours let it rest. Plus you're just waisting electricity.
