I just was reading about the Cost Containment research insitiute. NOW WARNING THIS IS NOT SAFE FOR EVERY DRUG. But Lipitor can be cut in half. If you are taking 10mg of Lipitor, ask your Doctor about prescribing you 20mg. Then go to your Pharmacist and ask him to cut the tablets in half. You will pay for two months supply, what you are now paying for one months supply. Lipitor 10mg and Lipitor 20 mg for a one months supply both cost the same price, this also works if you are on 40mg of lipitor and your Doctor will write you a prescription for 80mg. Again a warning, this will not work on every medication, always, always ask your doctor.
Medications that can be split are as follows. Ambian, Aricept, Buspar, Effexor, Lipitor, Remeron, Luvox, paxil. Also, ask your doctor for three months supply of Lipitor, to save even more.

If you are over 60 or on long term medication (my doctor told me Lipitor is for life) you should be getting free prescription. Well that's how it works in Britain where we have the National Health Service which is paid for by everybody out of their taxes. Perhaps you live in another country but I can recommend this system if you can influence your government to introduce it. The drug companies still get paid for their products though there are, I understand many problems over pricing whilst drug companies remain unnationlised.
Still that's more difficult to achieve.
Good idea though, if you are compelled to pay.

I was on Lipitor, now take Simvastatin...which is generic...for Zocor...works just as well for me...and my Part D Medicare plan charges me only $2 per prescription which is a whole lot less than Lipitor was costing.

And ditto on checking with one's doctor. Not all drugs are recommended for cutting in half.

There are several generic statins on the market. They are significantly cheaper than brand Lipitor. You should only split pills which have a score. Cutting unscored pills is not exact. You can end up with high or low doses.
I refuse to cut the unscored pills in half for liability reasons. If you want to cut them at home, that's your own business.

Good idea except cutting unscored (no line in tablet for breaking) tablets can actually cause problems. When you cut the coating on some tablets, it screws up the timed-release properties or ruins the coating that protects the stomach from irritation. What you do at home is your own business. I refuse to cut any tablet not scored.

Many Insurance company's will opt for the 3 month supply... and if you can go generic it costs even less... ours now comes in the mail... nice! Ten dollars/ 3 months, generic,
thirty five/ 3 months, name brand... I was impressed!
I've had to cut mine in half too... the doses were just to strong!
We just had to change off the lipitor... severe muscle cramps!

Thanks Hon! God Bless!

Thanks, This is a good deal for those of us who have insurance, but the insurance won't pay for 3 month supplies (thus we have to buy one month at a time and can't get the same savings as mail order, etc...) Even my new insurance mentions this in their booklet - I think they call it scored medications...
Thanks again for the info/reminder!!
