A split between the North and the South, the old Mason Dixon line of the Civil War.

The South voted Democratic for over a hundred years after they lost the civil war. This gave democrats many electoral votes, but created many compromises in the House and Senate.

Around the time of Regean, the South began to vote Republican, and this changed the dynamics of national politics.

You will find that the strongest support for Bush is in the old slave states, for example.

Democrats now have a difficult time winning national elections without their old southern voting block.
