They finally got a real test at the Horseshoe and got beat.

They were not overrated, they have exceeded any expectations that were had of them before the season. They were picked to be 3rd or 4th in the Big Ten this year. Holding on to #1 for 4 weeks is overachieving for the "rebuilding" year at Ohio State.
Lets start talking about leagues that are overrated. Like the SEC? Pac10?

First, yes, I've been saying for weeks now that Ohio State was overrated. I am not saying that they are bad, but that the media hadn't learned its less from last year's Ohio State fiasco. True, this is a different OSU team, but the Big Ten is not all that different from last year: it is still diluted and weak. Do not be fooled by the fact that ten of the eleven Big Ten teams are bowl eligible. The Big Ten this year--and last year for that matter--is not the ruthlessly talented and uber-competitive conference that, a bit like the SEC currently, we saw in 2005 when Ohio State gave the Vince Young-led Texans all they could handle, when Penn State was legitimately one of the top teams in the nation, when Minnesota upset Michigan in Ann Arbor, when Michigan upset Penn State, when Northwestern knocked off Wisconsin. That, my friends, was a powerful conference. The 2006 and 2007 editions of the Big Ten are a bit like the NL Central in MLB. There's competition, sure, but no one will confuse the Big Ten of these past two seasons to the SEC, the Pac 10 (which, for some strange reason, gets disrespected), the Big 12, and, maybe even--despite its off-the-mark feel this year--the Big East. The Clash of the Titans selling of the Ohio State-Penn State game a few weeks back was nothing more than hype and media spin. Penn State is an okay team, but they lost to Michigan 14-9, and although Michigan has turned its season around nicely, they struggled to put away weak competition like Northwestern and Michigan State. Oh, and Penn State nearly lost to Indiana. Then Ohio State put away Wisconsin, supposedly the second round of Clash of the Titans--this, the same Wisconsin team that nearly lost to UNLV, that gave up 30+ points to The Citadel, that got into a shoot out with improved-but-still-miserable Michigan State, that got pummeled by the just-okay Penn State. Forgive me for not being floored by Ohio State's wins here. Again, it sounds as if I am being disrespectful. I am not. Ohio State wins, and wins, and wins, and even in a watered-down conference, wins are no given in college football, certainly not this year. Rather, I just wish to point out that there was a lot of hooplah surrounding OSU that wasn't perhaps warranted; they were a number-one team by default. I'm glad that they lost to Illinois, not because I am anti-Buckeye but because I could see all too clearly where things might be heading: another embarrassing performance in the national championship game.

We should all learn our lesson from last year. I did, though I am not embarrassed to admit that I too thought that OSU would beat up on Florida. Even though I had mentioned to friends, right after OSU's weak win over Illinois last season, that the Buckeyes had stacked up wins against pitiful competition, I still didn't doubt their overall dominance. Their humiliating--and I mean *humiliating*--defeat against Florida reminded the nation that we should have seen the writing on the wall all along: Ohio State did not play a challenging schedule! They beat a Texas team without Vince Young, and although Colt McCoy is talented, beating the Longhorns in McCoy's second game of the post-Vince Young era isn't a signiature win.

And to the crazy Ohio State fans who believe that the Buckeyes schedule tough non-conference games, please pass me whatever you are smoking, because it must be some fine, fine herbage. Okay, Texas aside (and, as I wrote above, I'm not sure the mythic Ohio State vs. Texas match of last year was all that marquee), Ohio state does *not* schedule decent non-conference opponents. Unlike, USC, for instance, who last year played Arkansas, Nebraska, and Notre Dame, in addition to a pretty grueling PAC 10 schedule, let's look at Ohio State's "challenging" non-conference foes: last year's slate: Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Cincinnati; this year's slate: Youngstown State, Akron, Kent State, and lowly Washington. Combine a watered-down Big Ten schedule with several weak non-conference games and what you have is another recipe for disaster, a second straight humiliation in the championship game.

OSU replaced into fortunate that Wisconsin folded immediately. OSU is likewise fortunate that they play interior the vast 10. in the event that they have been contributors of the SEC or %10, they could have already got 3 losses. undergo in recommendations Phoenix January 8, 2007; Florida 40-one OSU 14
