Dionysos (Greek) Bacchus (Latin) is the god of wine, intoxication, and frenzied sexuality; and he is the only Olympian god to have a mortal mother. He was worshiped in Greece most notably around 1500 B.C.E. He is the son of the god Zeus and the beautiful princess Semele. Semele was tricked by Zeus' wife Hera during her pregnancy to request that Zeus show himself to her in his godly form. Well, no mortal can gaze upon the shining thunder god with out consequence so Semele was consumed by the brilliance of his presence. But before her spirit could flit off to the underworld Zeus saved his newborn son and sewed him into the thigh of his leg.

After Dionysos' birth Zeus hid him in the mountains with the nymphs to watch over him. Many times he was dressed as a girl to hide his identity from his step-mother Hera. Other stories recount how he was torn apart and remade and raised as a girl. All this bringing about great madness in the young demi-god. In a nutshell he inspired the worship of women who sought to be free from societies clutches. These women indulged themselves often in free drunken ecstasy.

Today we celebrate Bacchanalia, the festival of the god Dionysos, with drink, music, and sex (optional) just as they did thousands of years ago.

There are TONS of stories of the life of Dionysos, and all worth the reading!

he was so cool, he was placed between the original twelve most important olympians (hestia retired in his favor).

however, just a few know that there is an astonishing resemblance between dionysus and jesus christ.

1. Dionysus comes down to earth as god made flesh as a savior and is the son of God.
2. His Father is a god and his mother is a mortal virgin.
3. His born in a humble stable on December 25 before three shepherds.
4. He dies at Easter time for the sins of the world.
5. After he dies he descends into hell and rises again on the third day.
6. He preaches about a Holy communion of his sacred body and blood for the forgiveness of sins.

and these are just a few - maybe the most shocking and the most obvious.

life, indeed!

Dionysus (or Bacchus to the Romans) was the youngest of all the gods of the 12 olympians. he was god of wine and was always partying. He took the place of hades and hestia (goddess of the hearth)

Ah yes, Dionysus, the twice born god. His morther was a mortal and when Hera, the wife of Zeus, his father, discovered the woman was sith child she went, in disguise and dinvicned the woman that, if the man were TRULY Zeus, he shoudl prove it to her by showing himslef in all his godly glory. The woman, when Zeus returned to her as for a boon, to which he siad she could have anyting she wanted. She requested that he show himself in all his goldy glory, which he did, reluctantly becasue He knew what would happen. When he revealed himself, the poor woman burst into flames as no mortal could stand the presence of the thunder god in all his godly power. As she was incinerated into ashes, Zeus managed to save the unborn child and sewed him into his thigh where he remainded until he was ready to be born.

He is a true Hedonist

If I were a worshiper of the Greek gods I would probably be one of his followers (although I cold fit in with the followers of Hades and Hermes as well.)

Actually, yes, he was the life of the party. He threw many parties and was usually invited to bashes by the other God because he knew how to have a good time and brought good fortune with him....and good wine.

Indeed, he threw the best parties on earth or Olympus. I made a Greek style kylix and painted Dionuysus and his sileni dancing around it with some lovely naaids. When I drained the cup, I saw the face of Medusa the Gorgon that stoned anyone who saw it.

I love him in mythology but he is the opposite in the Percy Jackson series. He's a total adult-out-to-make-your-life-harder guy. It's awful! I bet he was a sweet guy to party with...

They say that he was similar to one of the Eygptian gods but I don't remember who. If you want some intresting reading on History, try the The Cartoon History of the Universe. It's actually in comic book style, but it's very informative and much more intresting than any history text book.
