I think I read somewhere that once you hit 4 cm, it's considered active labor.

I have no idea...I was dilated 2cm and 100% effaced for about a month before I went into labor (BUT that was 2 months early)

After that with all my other pregnancies...I wasn't dilated at all before going into labor...I would start contracting for about 2 hours...go to the hospital...and be like 1cm....then an hour later I would be 4cm....

I think that you can be as dilated as your body can handle (10cm though I'm thinking you would be in labor because that's when you start pushing)...and if you're not contracting I don't know how they can say you're in labor no matter how dilated you are.

Every one is different....so it would literally depend on your body and whether or not you're contracting. Of course I would assume that the more you dilate the closer to labor you are.

My sister was 5 cm when she went to the hospital (because her water broke). She didnt even know she was dialated and didnt have any pain until she hit about 7 cm (they put her on pitocin to speed things up).
