I am 16 weeks pregnant & I have horrible back pains.
I have used the heating pad on a low setting for about 20 minutes at a time.It was just recently brought to my attention that it may not be safe.If it isnt safe, what are your suggestions to ease my lower back pain safely?

absolutely fine to use it! Whoever told you its not safe obviously hasn't had back pain in pregnancy.

20 mins on, 20 mins off is usually the best way to ease pain and inflamation.

You can also try massage, chiropractic, hot showers and some paracetamol if it gets really bad. Also ask your chemist if it is okay to use some 'Deep Heat' or 'Dencorub' on the sore area. I'm sure it would be fine (its an anti-inflamatory cream to help tissue/muscle ache)

Best of all though, put your feet up as much as you can. Wear good comfy shoes (no high heels!!!, break out the flats!) and get your partner to do any heavy lifting!!

best of luck and congrats!

My doctor actually recommended a heating pad in my 8th week of pregnancy and I still use it (14 weeks now) I had intollerable back pain and could barley move by the end of each day. I also got one of the portable heating pads that you put in the microwave and can wrap around your waist. They last 3-4 hours too.

I think the only place you can't use a heating pad is close to your uterus and the front side. If your afraid, call the doctor to be safe.

It's not safe because hot temperatures can raise your core temperature (even low). That can cause problems for the baby. (just like taking hot baths or a hot tub).

Also...your skin can become more sensitive while you are pregnant....even a low setting....and you can suffer burns more easily.

For back pain (I always have it since my baby's LOVE to lay on my sciatic nerve...and I have a blown disk in my back)...I would suggest a nice warming massage oil (you can heat up olive oil in the microwave - it doesn't keep heat on your back and it's great for your skin) and tell your man (since he got you into this) to rub your back. Also...it helps me a lot to prop my feet up on the arm of the loveseat (a couch would work just as well)...for some reason that height really helps my back. Maybe even get a body pillow (it's long and allows you to support your belly, place between your knees etc all at the same time)...

I've also sat with on my legs where my feet are under my bottom. Then slowly lay down my belly down over my knees stretching out my lower back. (that helps with the disk problem so much).

Try different things to help with the back pain....BUT stay away from heating pads. Even my Dr warns against them.

Good luck. And of course...double check with your own Dr. I've been going to a chiropractor a lot since I've gotten pregnant....they have all kinds of tricks to help alleviate pain without meds. Just make sure that the Dr knows your knocked up before you make an appt. (the reason is that they need a specific table to accomodate your belly).

I love when people give others thumbs down when saying what their doctors told them, or when citing a reputable source.

A heating pad will NOT raise your core body temperature unless you have it on for a very long time! It is safe for you to use, but not directly on the abdomen. I think that the MayoClinic can be trusted more than some random people on Yahoo.

I am 19 weeks and i have also having really bad back aches. My doc told me that since i didnt want any meds, I could use a heating pad, but only use on the lowest setting.

Yes you can use one. Just dont have it on high. Have it on a mild to very low setting. Dont leave it on for hours on hours.
