Hey all, she's talking about Australopithecus AFARENSIS, not africanus. A. afarensis lived in East Africa between 3 and 4 million years ago. "Lucy" is the best example of an A. afarensis.

Australopitheus africanus is a homidid that lived 2-3 million yrs ago in the Pilocene era. Some view this to be a direct ancestor to Homo sapien & others think it evolved into Paranthopus & basically became an evolutionary dead end.
No tools associated with this hominid have been found & the arms were very ape like.
Edit:
I could have sworn you asked about A. africanus instead of A. afarensis? A. afarensis existed some 2.9 to 3.9 yrs ago & was considerably more ape like than A. africanus. Some debate their full bipedalism due to the length of their arms and the feet were still somewhat ape like... it is possible they were only partially bipedal. Many reject their relationship to modern humans because earlier hominids were more evolved for bipedalism. Full bipedalism seems to have existed some 3-4 million yrs ago.
