Reuters is a British based international wire service (and now also a TV syndication service along with being a photo wire service). It has offices situated in almost every country in the world, and in some countries a number of offices. It covers both normal and financial news.

The company was started in the late 19th Century by Baron Von Reuter, a German national who migrated to England. He started sending economic news between European countries and London by 'carrier pigeon' and the company has grown to be the largest international news agency in the world.

In 1982 it started its photographic section and later, in the mid 1990's it took full control of Visnews Ltd. (a TV news syndication service) which it had previously had a one-third share along with the BBC.

Its 'wire-service' competitors are the (American) Associated Press (AP); the (French) Agence France Press (AFP). Previously there was also United Press International (UPI), another American company that has been absorbed by one of its competitors.
Its 'photo' competitors are AP and photo agencies such as "Sigma" and "Photo" and several others.
Its TV competitors are CBS, (American) ABC and NBC which it also has an agreement with to sell each others domestic vision or what the other does not have. The new company that started in the late 1980's, CNN, has also become a competitor.

Reuters is a large intenational news agency, I think they're based in the Netherlands. They get all the news because they have many correspondents all over the world and in all the hot spots. Many other news organizations who don't have the money or the inclination to cover the world use Reuters, just like the use the Associated Press (AP) or Canadian Press (CP).

You are mistaken. Reuters has competition, such as Associated Press. A lot of news comes from others first.

Reuters is a wire service that most of the major news media subscribes to. They also have their own reporters covering many places in the world.

A wire service is to the news media, what a discussion list is to ordinary people. The various news media uncover things in their local communities that out of town news media might not be aware of. They send their stories to the wire service(s) which then relay them to all the news media (newspapers, TV etc.) that subscribe to that wire service.
