Well considering if you find a house you like now, it will most likely not be available still in 8 months to 1 year. I would start looking a month or two before you are financially ready to move.

Start looking now so you will know about what you want. With today's buyer's market the house you want maybe available in 8 months to a year. Make sure your credit score is up. Most lenders are being harder when giving out loans. Do your homework and get a fixed APR.

It's great to start looking in advance, because you will be well versed in the local market. Go to some open houses this weekend or cruise the internet. http://www.realtor.com is a good site to view homes.

It's not too soon to look around and see what you like and what you don't, and about how much houses cost in your area. You can do some of the preliminary searching on the Internet.

The first thing you should do is get pre-approved. This will help you know specifically what price range to look in, and also if there are any issues that need to be addressed in advance.
