I ask because I'm listening to "Police & Thieves" by the Clas which was orginally a ska song that they managed to make into a fantastic punk song. But, I mean the genre has to be REALLY different. So a death metal cover of a doom metal song shouldn't be included, and I'm going to force myself to resist putting punk covers of "classic" rock or proto-punk songs.

But, as much as I love that one I'll say my favorite inter-genre cover is Bob Marley's "Johnny Was" as performed by Stiff Little Fingers. This one sounds nothing like reggae at all, but it's a great great song. It lasts 7 minutes without getting old or repeating itself over and over. With all the stuff they add to it they still keep all the soul too, and its still a moving song.

Other notables:
"My Way" - Sid Vicious (far cry from Sinatra)
"12 Days Of Christmas" - The Yobs (a punked up "adult" version)
"Lipstick On Your Collar" - The Saints (one of my favorite songs, punk but a faitful cover)

"Do You Wanna Dance" done by the Ramones, I'm not sure which version is the original but this one kicks the crap out of the Mamas & The Papas version.

"Viva Las Vegas" by the Dead Kennedys

"Satisfaction" by Devo, I said I wouldn't include punk covers of classi rock, but this is far from your average punk or classic rock song, a really funky version that I couldn't really put in a genre.

"I Got You Babe" done by the Dictators

"All The Way" as done by Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Here I actually find both versions undearable.

"Anarchie Pour Le UK" performed by some French guy. Pretty neat, definitely not punk or even rock, but neat.

"I Heard It Through The Grape Vine" done by the Slits is alright.

Definitely The Gourd's doing Snoop Dogg's version of "Gin & Juice". There's not much better than hearing "I got bi***es in the living room getting it on\ And they're not leaving 'til six in the morn" in a bluegrass style.

Also, The Dickies performing Christmas carols with "Silent Night." Or classic pop with "The Sounds of Silence."

Frazier Chorus did a fantastic cover of "Anarchy in the U.K.", very slow pop reminiscent of something I'd hear in an elevator.

Edit: Good call on the SW version of I Can See Clearly Now. Another one I dig is Big Black taking Kraftwerk's 'The Model' and turning it into an abrasive threatening mix.

Oh, it has to be Michael Bolton's version of Leann Rimes'/Faith Hill's "How Can I Live Without You?"

No.. I'm kidding. My god, I HAVE to be kidding.

Metallica's cover of "turn the page" is the only one I can think of.

Nope- though some more--- Big Head Todd's "Tangerine" - great version.

I loved the Deftones cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love". And Faith No More's rendition of The Commodores' "Easy" is one of my all-time favorites.

Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2, covered by the Electric Hellfire Club.
They turned it from rock into industrial. It's way better. :]

Baby One More TIme by Travis is funny (Jingly jangly indie compared to the pop version that was originally done by Britney Spears)
