I recently got a male betta, I was going to get a bowl, but I didn't have the heart to, I got a small, five gallon aquarium. I realize that I have a little bit of space and I know some fish that go with bettas, but I was wondering what fish I can add that you guys like. Any extra info about the fish you select would be great.

No fish will happily go with a betta in a 5 gallon tank but an African Dwarf frog would be awesome! 5 gallons is the perfect betta setup and ADF lives in the water in the same conditions as your betta I think they eat the same food but not completely sure
I'll wikipaste a little about them
"should be fed every two days at full maturity, but every day while they are growing; a day skipped every week helps with digestion They are often sold in pet shops and can live in captivity for 10-20 years at the max, most lasting an average of 7."

Ther ya go!
Never get an african clawed frog though would eat your bettas little tail off

I have my betta with 1 balloon male molly, 1 male platy and 1 pepper cory, and they get along really great with each other

You could add up to 4 neon tetras or rasboras and some apple snails

Hope that helps
Good luck

Usually I would say that bettas should be kept in a minimum of 5 gallons, but you already have it in one. This means that it should be kept alone unless you want to upgrade his tank to a 10 gallon. This would provide sufficient enough space for more fish. Some fish you shouldn't keep with him are other male bettas, females who aren't conditioned to be with him, and fish that look similar to male bettas. Fish you can have with him are cories, tetras, otos, and any peaceful community fish. Make sure he has a heater and filter.

I'm not sure what 5 gallons is converted into litres (I'm being lazy for not looking up - accept my apologies!) but I wanted to tell you about my Siamese Fighter called Foo.
He's living very happily in a 180ltr with mollies, tetras, one platy, clown loaches & a plec!
He absolutely adores the mollies and follows them everywhere & they seem to love him too!
I'm really very much against keeping these beautiful fish in such small confined bowls... how can they possibly thrive regardless of being able to breathe air!! I'm glad you're giving him more room!
My Fighter is SO happy in so much space!

get a couple of Cory catfish, they are bottom dwellers so they will keep the gravel clean, and won't get in the way of your Beta
