Ideally, you would attend a good journalism school, write for the school's newspaper and intern at good companies. If done right then you should graduate with a degree, have a portfolio of work from the school's newspaper, and have good contacts and references (especially from the internships). Your resume would be impressive enough for employers to take extra notice because you'll have a solid foundation.

Anyone can be a writer, a GOOD writer is something different. I recommend starting off writing short stories. Pass them around to friends and family and get honest feedback. Take the feedback seriously. After you build some confidence in your writing abilities, try submitting a short story or two to a magazine that prints them (like Reader's Digest). IF you get turned down, DO NOT GIVE UP! Stephen King was denied publication of his first few stories and look where he is today! Good luck in your endeavor and best of luck to you in your writing journey!!

Mandatory, without which you stand no chance:
(1) An ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEGREE- without it all you can do is dream of becoming a journalist
(2) Journalist's initial position in a small newspaper.
(3) your own ability.
Being inquisitive, the love to report events, etc are things thatyou are born with and are not taught.
--------------------------- post scriptum ------------------------
For those people who thumbed down, I will repeat... without a degree you stand no chance of becoming a serious journalist You can dream about it... but that's all.

You gotta have people skills, be the kind of person that people can just open up to. And then go to journalism school.

1. have a knack for it. do you have great communication skills? a real people person? are you witty? a great writer?
2. go to school for journalism. most schools, like mine, have a communications program and you pick journalism as your "concentration" of study.

First, you must be total liberal dedicated to socialism. If so, then Journalism in college. If you are not from the Ivy-league schools, don't expect to be on TV however.
