If you are asking this question, maybe you should read the book again. It was very obvious and you couldn't have missed the fact that he chopped up the man because he didn't like his eye. Start paying attention to what you are reading.

Poe didn't write stories about insane people. He wrote stories about ordinary people driven to madness and unspeakable acts when the "dark side" takes over their psyches. What makes his stories so harrowing is that his characters are normal to begin with.

A better analysis is to discuss HOW this dark side prevails in the story, not a proof that his character is insane.

...and I wouldn't question the intelligence of someone offering an opinion when you're the one asking for help analyzing a very easy and straightforward story.

well, he might kind of be insane, because the narrator just killed the old man because he didn't like his eye. He also heard heart beats around him.

I have always thought that the story itself gives the most evidence, to be searched through and identified as proof by such a discerning reader as yourself. I know you can do it, it just takes a little time. If you can't find proof, show why the narrator is not insane. You can do it, never fear.
